Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg (iASK)

Established in November 2015, the Institute of Advanced Studies was founded at a time of more and more complex global problems. Significant population growth, migration, climate change and their combined impacts such as rapid urbanization, growing urban destitution and diminishing natural habitats are all alarming signs as far as the state of Earth is concerned. If we consider the political instability of the great regions of the world, the spread of violence as well as the recent and the imminent financial crises in the context of global crisis, then more and more questions are raised, yet it is even more difficult to provide reassuring answers:

Will we be able to deal with these overlapping impacts and if yes, at what cost?
Are we able to adapt to these inevitable changes creatively?
Aren’t we prisoners to outdated ideologies and institutions unable to change?
Does humankind follow a sustainable path or are we on the brink of collapse?

Millions of people, researchers and politicians still stick to illusionary or vanishing “certainties” desperately because of a lack of alternatives. However, conventional frameworks of interpretation do not seem to provide sufficient points of reference. Our world has become ‘complex’. Processes have become considerably rapid, contradictory and often lead to unresolvable conflicts. The role and mission of science as a means of understanding phenomena and explanation to correlations has become increasingly important. Additionally, the responsibility of the science dealing with the most complex phenomenon known as human society has grown significantly.

Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg

Our Institute has created a new generation of researchers, lecturers and experts representing creative and responsible sustainable solutions in an age of global transformation. Our ongoing objective is to turn Kőszeg into an international center for Hungarian and foreign practitioners where knowledge is utilized in a tangible way through cooperation among students, research fellows and locals for the benefit of the community and every one of us.

The program is aimed at the creation of an innovative regional development concept based on the recognition that the success of regional and urban development and investment depends decisively on effective cooperation among economic and social actors of the region combined with novel cultural heritage management.

The other major activity of the centre is built around an accredited, Hungarian-language training program aiming at structured competence development and awareness-raising. Its main objective is to provide assistance to company directors and their employees to get to know and to apply the Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 methodologies. Additionally, an innovative digital environmental protection system (https://www.enviromind.hu/ ) is also operated by the Centre where incidents of pollution, i.e. waste, smell, noise etc. may be reported by residents.
