The St. Martin’s Church

The medieval church was built in honor of St. Martin the Confessor. It was built by the villages: Kis- and Nagypöse in the 14th century. According to a charter dated in 1400 the east window of the church sanctuary marked exactly the boundary line between the two villages. At the turn of the 20th century the parish church was in a poor condition so it was demolished and was rebuilt by Prince Miklós Esterházy in 1905. According to the description of the then parish priest József Wallner the plans for the reconstruction of the “zigzag building” were made from the foundations by the Viennese architect Ludwig Schöne in Neo-Gothic style similar to the Heart of Jesus Church in Kőszeg. Some stone carvings from the old church can also be found in the new church. The stained glass windows of the new church which depicting St. Martin were made from a donation of Dénes Verbói Szluha. The painting of the nave depicting the cloak-sharing scene in Amiens was made by an Austrian painter, Josef Veiter in 1882. The seal of the parish of Nagypöse which was made in 1834 also shows the scene of the cloak-sharing: Martin sitting on a horse hands half of his cloak to a beggar sitting on the ground. The building is a monument.
