St. Martin’s Way (Via Sancti Martini)
A European pilgrimage route to St. Martin and his life
In 2005, the Council of Europe declared the route from Szombathely to Tours a European Cultural Route to present the life and outstanding memories of its cult, the most popular saint in Europe, St. Martin. St. Martin was born in 316 in Savaria, Pannonia, on the site of which the present-day city, Szombathely was built. As the son of a military tribune, he himself became a soldier at the age of fifteen. He excelled among the soldiers of the Roman Empire with his goodness, his condolences to the sick and the poor. At the age of eighteen, he was baptized in Amiens — the city where he gave half of his cloak to a shivering beggar. In his dream, Jesus told him that he was the beggar with whom he had done good. As a result of the vision, he became a Christian, left the military field, and embarked on a conversion journey.
